This paper focuses mainly on surveys of the wealthy that were repeatedly carried out by Jiji Shimpo. I consider the reasons for carrying out the surveys, how the results were reported, and the social implications of the surveys. It becomes apparent that in modern Japan, members of the economic elite did receive increasing attention. As a result of this process, a normalized image was formed of people known as magnates (fugou). In particular, the number of magnates came to be considered a marker of a nation's degree of civilization. This viewpoint has eroded over time, and it is significant that since these early surveys of the wealthy, social concern with magnates has gradually shifted towards greater interest in the private sphere.
