| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to show that Japan cannot be considered a civilization because it does not meet the three basic requirements for civilization-building. In earlier papers published in this Bulletin, vols.52, 53 and 54, the author defined these requirements as (1)a certain and universal principle for a way of life which extends over a wide area and penetrates into a large population. This serves as a fundamental standard governing the ways a society is made and the manner by which people live in it. For example, a political standard may be liberal democracy, and a religious one may be Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, etc.; (2)a plentiful supply of food and other provisions sufficient to sustain a large population composed of various cultures, among which the strongest one predominates and becomes the core of the civilization. (3) a potent military force adequate to protect the entire compound of society and culture. This compound is nothing less than a civilization In this volume the author aims to demonstrate that a certain and universal principle concerning "a way of life" has been absent from Japan since the Meiji Restoration. This will be shown by examining the journal of Erwin Balz and the discourse of Soseki Natsume, and by referring to the Japanese tradition of political and cultural bandwagoning in the course of modern history. | |||||||||||||
