She tried other genres, including contemplative poetry, travel writing and novel, and always adhered closely to the traditional expectations of woman writers. Jackson was praised particularly for her contemplative poetry during the ruthless, materialistic \"Gilded Age\" because many readers at that time longed for literary expressions of what was moral and ethical. But in 1873, when she left the East for her health and settled in the West, her traditional style changed. Though Jackson had started her career within the genteel tradition, she departed from its influences and gained a unique point of view on the West. In Colorado, she developed a standpoint different from that of most Easterners. As a woman writer, Jackson was ahead of her time in praising and enjoying life in the West.
